You also get to pick the island you play a mission on and if it is an island you have played on already you can continue right where you left your city. This time in Tropico’s single player really takes you through a time progression where you can unlock new time eras. The single-player luckily has a lot of content to offset the flaws of the multiplayer, but it is still not enough. On top of all of that there is no save or disconnection back-up, meaning if the game crashes, if the internet goes down, or if you simply want to stop that game and continue it later - you can’t. The multiplayer issues do not stop there. The developers clearly did not want to do this though as it would likely hurt the sale of future downloadable content. A simple map editor would have helped combat this issue.

It also does not help that there are so few maps the multiplayer just uses the same maps from the single-player, which you will long be fed up with if you have completed the single-player campaign already. So once again the multiplayer sounds great, but the actual implementation feels like a missed opportunity. Though there is a co-op mode, this is actually just to work together in a team to reach the victory condition. In addition, you also have some multiplayer-only options, such as team setups and such. unlimited money, modifiable victory conditions, etc. During a multiplayer match you are offered the same optional modifiers as the single-player sandbox mode e.g. Why the developers did this, I do not know. Even though the game has some elements of Steamworks, the multiplayer invitation system is built into the game itself rather than using the vastly superior Steam invite system. In multiplayer, the issues start from the first moment you want to play a match. I presume this is the result of a rushed development cycle. I do not know what is worse, the bugs themselves or simply the lost potential. The odd thing about Tropico 5 is how everywhere you look for the new features and improvements, each and every one is hampered by design oversights or bugs.

But alas the execution of the multiplayer is not without its flaws, which is a shame as they really hold back the game. The multiplayer sounds like a great idea for the franchise and in fact, it is.
